Motor yachts fall into three basic categories:  cruisers, trawlers, and houseboats.  While houseboats are the least seaworthy of the categories, they are perfect for families who want to live on the water with all the comforts of home.  While houseboats aren't designed for deep or remote waters, they are adequate for protected waters.  Houseboats range in length from 25 to 100 feet, with outboard motors that are typically 30 to 100 horsepower.  Houseboats generally include kitchens, dining rooms, bedrooms, and bathrooms — just like home!  Of all the motor yachts, houseboats are the least inexpensive option, costing anywhere from $25,000 to $100,000.

Cruisers and trawlers, by contrast, have more power and more seaworthy fittings, and therefore, do well in offshore waters and large inlets.

Cruisers have planing hulls which allow them to reach speeds of 40 miles per hour.  Most have twin engines.  The interiors of cruisers are often well appointed with quality fittings.  Most cruisers range in length from 30 to 55 feet, with prices ranging from $80,000 to several million dollars.

Trawlers have rounded displacement hulls, which means that their speed is typically limited to about 10 knots.  These hulls are very seaworthy and fuel-efficient, which makes trawlers a great choice for long distance travelers — as long as they have plenty of time to get where they are going!  Trawler lengths range from 28 to 50 feet, and they cost anywhere from $100,000 to $500,000.
