power boat Powerboats are very versatile and are a great choice for those not interested in the physical work involved in sailing.  Whether you are looking to tool around for a couple of hours with family or friends or are interested in serious speed, powerboats come in a wide variety.

Runabouts are wonderful, one-size-fits-all boats that are enjoyable in many situations.  Think of a runabout as similar to a car on water.  It has a windshield, a driver seat and a passenger seat, and two backseats.  There is usually space under the deck to store things like life jackets and water toys.

A bow rider is similar to a runabout, except that there are recessed seats in the bow accessed by a door in the windshield.  A bow rider allows for more passengers, typically six to eight.

Runabouts can also be equipped for waterskiing.  Powerboats designed for waterskiing are usually about 20 feet in length.  They have inboard motors as well as flat bottoms that allow them to plane easily while pulling skiers.  Some have fins on their keels to allow them to turn more sharply.

Performance boats are similar to runabouts, although their engines are more powerful.  Just like muscle cars have bigger engines than regular cars, performance boats have bigger engines than typical runabouts.  Some performance boats have engines with 225 to 1,000 horsepower!

Performance boats typically have a deep vee bottom and an aft that flattens into a planing pad.  This configuration allows the boat to lift high out of the water as speed increases.  How fast can performance boats go?  How about 60 miles per hour or more!  Performance boats of about 20 feet usually have outboard motors of 250 horses, while those in the 30 feet plus range might have two 500 horse stern drive motors that allow the boat to reach speeds of up to 100 miles per hour.
